MANDATE



 


Biological Oceanography Department is mandated to study the interaction between living resources and the physical and chemical characteristics of the coastal and inshore brackish and marine ecosystems.


Specific Mandates / Functions: 

  • Focus on marine ecology with emphasis on the life supporting potential
    of our marine waters in general and the extent to which they can sustain
    commercial stocks.

  • Benthic and Planktonic Communities Studies

  • Nutrient Status and Productivity Studies

  • Biological Assays

The department has 2 sections and eight units as follows:

  1.  Environmental Factors and Physiological Mechanisms
  •  Physical and chemical characteristics of the Nigerian  coastal  environment and their interplay with biological resources and
     phenomena

  •  Reactions to environmental stimuli in time and space
     
  •  Marine microcosms
     
  •  Environmental microbiology
